Renowned Author and Researcher Dr Daud Awwal Completes Landmark Historical Work on Ilorin
“ILORIN: History, Power, and Identity” Set to Preserve and Celebrate the Rich Heritage of Ilorin
Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria — I am delighted to announce to my esteemed readers, supporters, friends, and the great sons and daughters of Ilorin across the world that I have completed my latest book, ILORIN: History, Power, and Identity, a comprehensive historical study that explores the origins, evolution, governance, culture, and enduring identity of our beloved city.
This book is the result of years of intensive research, field investigations, archival consultations, and interviews with over 250 notable individuals, including traditional rulers, historians, community leaders, religious scholars, members of royal families, and custodians of Ilorin’s rich heritage. It traces Ilorin’s remarkable journey from a Yoruba frontier settlement to a prominent emirate within the Sokoto Caliphate and ultimately to a modern Nigerian city distinguished by its unique blend of Yoruba, Islamic, and Nigerian identities.
As an indigene of Ilorin, this project has been more than an academic undertaking; it has been a personal mission to document, preserve, and present an authentic account of our history for present and future generations. The book seeks to clarify historical narratives, celebrate our cultural heritage, and provide a deeper understanding of the forces that have shaped Ilorin’s political, social, and religious landscape over the centuries.
I believe that every great people deserve a well-documented history, and every generation deserves access to the stories, struggles, achievements, and values that define its identity. This work is my contribution to ensuring that the story of Ilorin is told accurately, responsibly, and comprehensively.
I extend my profound appreciation to all the scholars, traditional institutions, community leaders, religious authorities, and countless individuals whose knowledge, support, and cooperation made this project possible. I am equally grateful to my readers and supporters around the world, whose encouragement has inspired me throughout this journey.
I invite all Ilorin sons and daughters, historians, researchers, students, policymakers, and lovers of African history to look forward to the official release of this important publication. I am confident that ILORIN: History, Power, and Identity will become a valuable resource for understanding the city’s past, appreciating its present, and inspiring conversations about its future.
Further details regarding the launch date, book presentation, and availability will be announced soon.
Together, let us celebrate the history, resilience, and identity of Ilorin.
