The Kano State House of Assembly formally confirmed Murtala Sule Garo as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State today, Monday, April 27, 2026.
The confirmation followed a screening process conducted by an ad hoc committee led by Deputy Speaker Muhammad Bello. The Assembly unanimously approved the nomination after the committee verified Garo’s credentials and found him fit for the office.
Succession: Garo replaces Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who resigned from the position on March 27, 2026, amid reports of potential impeachment proceedings.
Constitutional Basis: The nomination was made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf under Section 191(3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution, which governs the filling of vacancies in the office of Deputy Governor.
Political Context: Garo was the deputy governorship candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections. His appointment marks a significant political shift, as Governor Yusuf—formerly of the NNPP—reportedly defected to the APC earlier this year.
Murtala Sule Garo is a veteran political administrator with over two decades of experience. His previous roles include:
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (2015–2023).
Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano Chapter.
Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
APC State Organising Secretary for Kano.
The Assembly’s decision was presided over by Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore, who reaffirmed the house’s commitment to working with the executive for the state’s development.
