The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially selected former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 presidential election.
The decision was announced yesterday in Abuja by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
Party leaders have described the pairing as a “unity and rescue ticket”.
Amaechi was chosen following his strong performance as the runner-up to Atiku Abubakar in the ADC presidential primary election.
The “AA” ticket pairs Atiku, a northern candidate from the North-East (Adamawa State), with Amaechi, a southern candidate from the South-South (Rivers State).
Party leadership highlighted Amaechi’s long public service record, including his roles as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation.
The alliance marks a major shift ahead of the 2027 polls. Reports indicate that the selection follows weeks of consultations to build a unified front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Observers note that Atiku plans a “partnership presidency” where Amaechi will take charge of key functions to help tackle Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.
