A serving officer with the 28 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Umuahia, Abia State, Inspector Bassey Asuquo has reportedly shot himself dead while on special duty in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area of Niger State
The National Press Newspaper gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at about 1:50 a.m., according to sources familiar with the situation.
Asuquo, who was deployed to the area for a special assignment, was said to have shown signs of unusual behaviour before the tragic development.
As a precautionary measure, his Unit Commander reportedly directed that Inspector Asuquo’s rifle be retrieved and kept in the armoury at the Sarkin-Pawa Police Division, SaharaReporters gathered.
However, further investigation revealed that the deceased officer gained access to a rifle belonging to another officer who was asleep at the time.
Asuquo allegedly took the weapon and fatally shot himself in the head.
His remains were deposited at the General Hospital Sarkin-Pawa.
When contacted for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, adding that the police had launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding it.
“Confirmed, further investigation into the matter is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” he told The National Press Newspaper.
