The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has authorized six states to regulate electricity markets. This sequel to the transfer of regulatory authority from the commission to the states.
The states are Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, Imo, Oyo and Edo.
Each of the states has set up an electricity regulatory agency and will be regulating the electricity market in their respective States.
Before now three of the states Ekiti, Ondo and Oyo were under Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
The electricity market in the Federal Republic of Nigeria was previously centralized and the move to decentralization was achieved when presidential assent was granted to the amendment of relevant portions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) on 17 March 2023.
