IGP REAFFIRMS POLICE’S COMMITMENT TO PRESS FREEDOM, PROTECTION OF CIVIC SPACE

As IGP Assures Partnership with Media to Combat Disinformation

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the Police Force to press freedom and protection of the civic space within a democratic society, following a significant courtesy visit from the Director-General (DG) of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, to the IGP on Thursday 13th March, 2025. This meeting underscores the importance of collaboration between the Police Force and media organizations in promoting transparency and accountability.

During the visit, the DG of VON expressed appreciation for the leadership demonstrated by IGP Egbetokun and commended the Force for its proactive efforts since the IGP’s assumption of office. The DG highlighted the critical role that the police play in maintaining public safety and order, while also voicing strong support for the IGP’s mandate to combat the spread of disinformation and misinformation that can adversely affect public perception of the Nigeria Police Force and the nation as a whole.

In response, IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude to VON for recognizing the essential role the NPF plays in safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens. The IGP further welcomed VON’s offer to leverage its platform to promote a positive image of the Force and to assist in countering the proliferation of fake news and disinformation.

The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to serving the Nigerian people with integrity and professionalism. The IGP reiterates the NPF’s commitment to continuous improvement and welcomes constructive feedback from the public on how the Force can better serve the nation.
