The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reaffirmed that all versions of the ₦1000, ₦500, and ₦200 banknotes, including old and redesigned notes, remain valid legal tender indefinitely, as upheld by a Supreme Court ruling on November 29, 2023. Statement by Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali says the public is advised to disregard claims that the old notes will cease to be legal tender on December 31, 2024. Nigerians are encouraged to continue using all Naira notes and to adopt electronic payment methods to reduce dependence on cash.
