Electricity consumers in Nigeria continued to pay more for prepaid meter. An electronic calculation machine that determined how electricity is consumed.
Recently, Electricity Regulated Authority, NERC, told Nigerians that prep[aid meters device suppose to be free that any electricity distribution company that can not provide the calculating device to their consumers should regard any electricity supply to be free.
According to the regulatory authority, prepaid meter syould not be more than N65,000 which must be paid back through energy consumed by the consumers.
But prices continued to increase. All promises by government turns out to be a mirage. Prices of Prepaid Electricity Meter continued to increase in Nigeria everyday as promises by electricity regulating authority watched helplessly.
Speaking to one of the customer in Lagos, “The rate is increasing by the day even as refund promise for payments under MAP.via token credits remain a mirage,” said Mr. Akanji .
Mr. Alabi, a media practitioner, a customer with IBEDC said: “Yes they just approved 5% increase for them despite Nerc saying it’s now deregulated. The last meeting I had with Nerc management that’s what they said to me ,that they won’t be determined Price but now 5% increase in price release not up to two months o. I will wait for Nerc response on my last letter on who is to provides meter, customer or disco before I say or do anything. But I’m sure only judiciary will untie the knot.”
